Weingut Schloss Lieser

Lieser, Mosel, Germany

Riesling from Thomas and Ute Haag's eight Grosse Lagen on the Middle Mosel, led by Lieser's own Niederberg Helden

The Middle Mosel's great sites are steep slopes of weathered Devonian slate. Schloss Lieser farms 26 ha of them, some vines about a hundred years old. Its Grosse Lagen include Niederberg Helden, Juffer Sonnenuhr, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Doctor and Goldtröpfchen.

Grapes are picked late, by hand, in several passes. Every Riesling ferments spontaneously at low temperature in a vaulted cellar about 100 years old.

Thomas Haag and his wife Ute bought Schloss Lieser in the 1990s, when the estate was run down. Thomas still makes the wines.

Their daughter Lara runs marketing, sales and export. Their son Niklas studied viticulture and oenology and works with Thomas in the cellar and vineyards.
