Domaine Sauveroy

St. Lambert du Lattay, Anjou, Loire Valley, France

Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc from 3 generations of the Cailleau family, on the Layon schists at Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay.

Domaine Sauveroy sits on the Layon Valley hillsides at Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay, in Anjou. Its first vines were planted in 1866, beside windmills on the slopes of the Hyrôme, a Layon tributary. This is Anjou noir, the western side of Anjou, where dark schists of the Armorican Massif replace the tuffeau of Saumur.

The family farms 28 hectares of Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grolleau Noir and Gris, Gamay and Chardonnay. Soils weathered from schist cover the slopes; on the hilltop at Clos des Sables they give way to Cenomanian sands and rolled gravels.

Francis and Donatienne Cailleau settled at Sauveroy in 1947 with 3 hectares of vines. Their youngest son Pascal took over in 1984, aged 19, and Véronique joined him in 1987.

Quentin Cailleau joined in 2018 after studying viticulture and oenology at ESA in Angers. He began the move to organic farming in 2019 and introduced amphora ageing.
